What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?

Therapy to address orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD’s)! OMD’s are irregularities with the form and function of the muscles of the oral and facial complex.

Asking for Pacifier

Symptoms may include:

  • Mouth breathing

  • Tongue thrust or atypical swallow pattern 

  • Persistent speech errors 

  • Food aversions or limited food repertoire 

  • Disturbed sleep, snoring, grinding teeth

  • Malocclusion or improper jaw growth 

  • Improper body posture/ alignment 

  • Prolonged oral habits (such as thumb sucking, pacifier use)

  • TMD and facial pain

In orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT)..

...we use neurologic re-education to:

​

  • Eliminate oral habits that influence dysfunctional muscle patterns 

  • Teach nasal breathing 

  • Teach proper oral resting posture

  • Teach proper chewing and swallowing patterns

  • Correct any speech sound errors
